Power Wheelchairs

Power Wheelchairs, also known as Electric Wheelchairs, are designed for, and used by, people who are unable to walk at all or only able to walk very short distances. They are ideal for people who wish to remain mobile inside the home and in the community. Power wheelchairs utilise two motors that drive the main drive wheels that are operated by the user through a joystick control.

Rear Wheel Drive, Front Wheel Drive or Mid-Wheel Drive?

Rear Wheel DriveFront Wheel DriveMid-Wheel Drive

Rear wheel and front wheel drive power chairs my be required for very specific users and applications, however, mid-wheel drive power wheelchairs are the most popular and offer a number of advantages over the other two. Mid-wheel drives are very manoeuvrable and able to turn within their own length. They have six wheels making them very stable on uneven surfaces and road crossings.

Basic Sizes - Small, Medium or Large?

Small/Portable
Small/Portable
Ideal for transporting in a motor vehicle with lightweight components. The basic lightweight seat is not suitable for all-day or long-term sitting. Small power chairs are very maneuverable for indoor use and some outdoor use on smooth surfaces.

Medium
Medium
Great for indoor use as they are very maneuverable and have better seating for medium term sitting. Medium power chairs have better outdoor capabilities than small portable chairs, as they are more stable due to a larger wheelbase, more power and larger batteries for extended range. They can generally only be transported with the use of a ramp or lifting system into the back of a vehicle.

Large
Large
Although still quite maneuverable for indoor use, these chairs are designed for more active people who intend to spend the majority of their day in the chair, travel longer distances and require all-day comfort. Suitable for larger framed users, offering weight capacities up to 295kg, these chairs are far more robust and adaptable to suit those with higher-needs.

Customisation
Customisation
Medium and large power chairs can be customised to accommodate high-need customers that use their power chairs all day, every day and require specialised seating, armrests and feet receivers. Tilt in space and additional power operated functions through the joystick are available.please refer to our Quantum Rehab section.
